2 Resolution Street Hughenden.   Under new manangement since our visit

Level drive through sites, but hosts ask you to drive to front, unhitch and park tow vehicle roadside in front of the caravan (which leaves room for another caravan to back in behind your van if need be). Lawn either side of these drive through sites and some have annex slabs.  Need long power cord to reach outlets. Wide bitumised roads between the rows of sites.

Amenities were clean and in very good condition, water quality and pressure was good, there was adequate hot water.  Good laundry. When we complimented the host on such good amenities, he said the block was due for replacement.  A new amenities block, including disability access is due for completion by Easter 2016.

No disability bathroom(see above).  Car wash down area.  Camp kitchen. Cabins.

Pros: Hosts lead you to site. Well maintained amenities. Toilet and shower doors open outwards (safety feature). Can access town swimming pool direct from caravan park. Pets permitted.

Cons: Noisy location, close to road and railway and fire sirens.

$23 per night for two powered.  Update April 2013 $28 powered and $20 unpowered per night for two, discount for singles

Tourism:  The Visitor Information Centre incorporates a small museum, showcasing a seven metre skeletal Muttaburrasaurus and other fossils found locally as well as from around the world.  A full sized model of a Muttaburrasaurus stands in the street.  Picnic by the Flinders River (usually dry); the longest River inQueensland.  Plaques dedicated to pioneers and local characters can be seen on a riverside walk at Robert Gray Memorial Park. Ten kilometres south of the town, drive to the top of the mesa Mount Walker to experience views over the town as well as in other directions from six lookouts.  Approximately 65 kilometres north of Hughenden is the Porcupine Gorge National Park, which can be seen in a day trip from town or by staying on site in the campground.

Date of stay: September 2009.

Allen Terry Caravan Park, Hughenden

tn_hughendencp.jpg

On the Capricorn Highway in the main street towards the eastern edge of Ilfracombe, a small historic town 27 kilometres east of Longreach.

Lawn sites at front of park. Caravan sites at rear are dirt; some with annex slabs. Most sites level.

Amenities very well presented and maintained, close to all sites.  Water pressure was good, there was adequate hot water, soap provided, paper towels/dryer provided.  Additional block of individual bathrooms are opened when needed. Good laundry.

Wood barbecues.  Well equipped camp kitchen.  Cabins beautifully presented and decorated, offering very good value for the area at $85 for single and $95 for twin roomed cabins.

Pros: Very friendly and helpful hostess; came out and showed us sites, helping us choose the one best suited to us and offered van parking assistance. Tourist advice given.  Lovely bathrooms; roomy and nicely tiled, doors open outwards (safety feature), shower curtains to keep dressing area dry, floor mats provided. Flowers on vanity add to homely decor. Bench to sit on in bathroom. Book exchange, with all funds going to local P&C. Happy hour with nibblies provided and entertainment by hosts Jesse, Cathy and family. Dogs on leash permitted. Fuel discount vouchers for a Longreach fuel station. Town dump point adjacent.

Cons: Some noise from road, nearby pub and dogs in the town.

Tourism Information: Ilfracombe is a heritage town, known mostly for its machinery mile - a collection of rural machinery which runs the entire length of the main street. There are other collections and places of interest in this historic town. Call in to the Wellshot centre and view a video on the history of a nearby Wellshot station. Town pool and spa from natural artesian water. All displays and tourist features in this town are free.  Close enough to Longreach to commute for sightseeing.

$23 per night for two powered        Update December 2013 price $28 for two powered and $24 unpowered with a small discount for singles.

Date of stay September 2009.

Rating 9.5 *

* This park only just falls short of the perfect score of 10 due to lack of a designated disability bathroom, although some of the toilets and showers are big enough to be used by someone with mobility limitations with a bit of assistance and this has occurred in the past. Discuss your needs with the owners.
