Sources used for identification of wildflowers shown on these pages and regions where they occur see Credits

These pages will feature some of the wildflowers we have photographed in Western Australia, and where possible, identified.  If you are able to help identify further flowers, or correct any I may have wrong, please contact us.

Information given for each species will give botanical name, known common names, describe the flower, give time of year it flowered, and where it was photographed, and the areas it occurs in.  Names have been matched to Florabase which has also been used to show distribution.

Variations of Thelymitra macrophylla, Scented Sun Orchids in various shades of blue, lilac and mauve and pink.  See a few of these hereunder.  There are differences on the colouration on the column cap as in the one at right, above left and below.  The flowers below also have a pink column.

Thelymitra macrophylla Scented Sun Orchid
Purple-blue orchid, several to many flowers along upright stem which comes from a single elongated leaf with ridges. White tufts in flower centre, a plain dark post-anther lobe (column apex or cap), a sweet scent may be discernible prior to fertilisation.  Flower petals have a sharper point than Thelymitra crinita.  Size of flowers up to four centimetres across.  Flower shades are variable, and colour on the tip of the column may be red or brown, particularly in the paler shade flowers. With all sun orchids, the lower petal is actually the labellum, with five real petals.  Leaf is a medium width thick ridged leaf which this can vary in length.
Late Spring
Bridgetown, South West Region, Western Australia and found in the Perth region and further east and north into the Wheatbelt, through the South West and along the south coast including Albany and Esperance and inland to Kalgoorlie
