Update on sealing of the Outback Way

Tree Top Walk, Walpole, Valley of the Giants, Western Australia - maintenance closure

The Tree Top Walk will be re-opened from 7th April 2022, just in time for the school holidays.
While maintenance has been underway, much of the walk has remained accessible, but identified structural issues have resulted in it being necessary to close the entire walk from today, Christmas Day, until completed. This is expected to be for several months, and at least until the end of February next year.  Regrettable during the holiday period, but essential for public safety.

The wheelchair accessible Tree Top walk is set in an ancient Tingle forest between Walpole and Denmark.  Read about Tingle treeshere. The platform takes you 40 metres above ground into to tops of trees on a 600 metre walkway.

While renovations are taking place, the Visitor Centre and the Ancient Empire ground level walk will remain open.

The Federal Government will invest an additional $678 million to seal another 1,000 kilometres of road and deliver further upgrades along Australia’s longest shortcut, Outback Way, creating thousands of jobs and better connecting regional industries and communities.

As part of the works, the remaining unsealed and substandard sections of Outback Way in Queensland and Western Australia will be sealed. Additional priority sections on the Plenty Highway and Tjukaruru Road in the Northern Territory will also be upgraded.

The Australian Government’s funding commitment represents 80 per cent of the total funding package, with state and territory governments providing the remaining 20 per cent.

The Government is committed to sealing the entire 2,720 kilometres of Outback Way and today’s funding commitment will help get the job done, cutting travel times for freight and tourists while giving residents along the route improved access to the supplies they need to live.

Sealing is expected to be completed in the 2027/28 financial year.
