Walking down into Buckley’s Breakaway, I was surprised at the size of this lesser known carved out landscape which is tucked away
in a small reserve, and how snow white much of it is.
Buckley’s Breakaway is reached from the Karlgarin South Road, four kilometres north of the Kulin-Hold Rock Road. A small car
parking area by the road has an outdoor picnic table and an information shelter, overlooking this breakaway. A walk trail goes
down into the gully.
The surface of orange laterite has been eroded to expose the softer white and pink kaolin. Photos tell the story better than
I can describe.
The valley floor is far from desolate, with areas of wildflowers and even trees, including the Cypress Pine, Callitris canescens.
Jilakin Rock overlooks Jilakin Lake which covers almost 100 hectares. A small viewing rest area is alongside the road. Tracks from this go to the lake’s edge. Photo above left from the parking area.
Jilakin Racecourse is around three kilometres
from the Kulin-Holt Rock Road, and is the home to the Kulin Races and camp draft events. Camping is only permitted here in conjunction
with these events. Photo above right from the racecourse.
Harvesting was continuing in the Jilakin area near Kulin. Above left a header at work harvesting wheat; one of two working concurrently
in this paddock. Above right shows some of the team required at harvest time, with a chaser bin and fire fighting unit. Utes parked also have water tanks in case of fire.
