These pages will feature some of the wildflowers we have photographed in Western Australia, and where possible, identified.  If you are able to help identify further flowers, or correct any I may have wrong, please contact us.
 
Information given for each species will give botanical name, known common names, describe the flower, give time of year it flowered, and where it was photographed, and the areas it occurs in.  Names have been matched to Florabase which has also been used to show distribution.

Caladenia flava subsp flava, Cowslip Orchid
Small yellow orchid which may have varying degrees of red splashes.  Short or very short stems usually with two or three flowers on the stem
Spring
Bridgetown, South West Region, Western Australia
Widespread through the South West, Perth. Wheatbelt, Mid West, Great Southern Regions, and occurs in the Goldfields

Caladenia ×spectabilis, Caladenia flava x Caladenia reptans (hybrid), Spectacular Spider Orchid 
Small hybrid orchid with a variety of shades and patterns of pink mixed with yellow may occur.
Spring
Bridgetown, South West Region, Western Australia, and found in areas where both Caladenia flava and Caladenia reptans occur.
 
The flowers below are Caladenia flava x Caladenia nana subsp nana hybrids

Caladenia flava hybrids

Caladenia flava subsp late red, Brookton Highway Cowslip 
Small yellow orchid which may have prominent and bright red splashes.  May be white towards the petal tips.  Very short stems and a broad leaf which is longer than the flower stem.

Bridgetown, South West Region, Western Australia
Recorded only from a small area within the Brookton and Wandering shires.  There are reports of this subspecies being found over a much wider area of the southern parts of Western Australia
Caladenia flava subsp sylvestris, Karri Cowslip 
Small yellow orchid with variable red markings which often has speckles, and a maroon tip on the column, and often has petal tips or all the petals being white.  Long stems

Bridgetown, South West Region, Western Australia, occurring from Perth through South West and lower Great Southern regions, extending beyond the Karri forests.

Caladenia flava subsp sylvestris, lutea form, Lutea Karri Cowslip 
This lovely plain yellow Cowslip was seen growing in the same area and at the same time as Caladenia flava subsp sylvestris, and is believed to be a lutea form of that species.  The flowers (above right) have a white tipped labellum, typical of Caladenia flava subsp sylvestris, whereas on the other (above left) even the labellum is the same rich shade of yellow.
